Exhibit Opening
""""""""Our Face to the World"""""""" The clothing of James and Elizabeth Monroe presents, for the first time, the museum's entire costume collection - one of the most complete presidential collections in the country. The 42 pieces in the collection, which included gowns, suits, vests, hats, gloves and other accessories are priceless sources of information about life in early America. In 2005, the museum embarked on the largest and most expensive conservation projects in its history, with the goal of restoring the costumes to their original 18th- and 19th century appearances. We are pleased to be able to display at last the stunning results of this project. Through such highlights as Elizabeth Monroe's wedding dress and vests worn by James Monroe on the eve of the Revolutionary War, the public will gain a better understanding of the personalities and daily lives of the Monroes. The limited engagement exhibit runs through April 2010.
